sound help

I have a compaq pc the thing is when i go on the internet to hear music or
try to play a dvd on it all i get is the backround and i cant hear the words or the singing all music.can someone help me on this matter please. what should i do? My speakers are working fine but it sounds like surround sound is going on i did uninstall on sound and that didt work,no conflicks in device mag.

So you're getting the surround channels only? I would try maybe uninstalling and sound card software and then delete the soundcard itself, reboot, and reinstall the most current drivers.

What kind of speakers? How are they plugged in?

Look at the mixer (volume control)...does it have the surround channels? Is everything 'on'...nothing muted?
