Suggestion: How about a Linux section? I know PC Guide generally focuses on hardware and Win/DOS but a basic Linux discussion section would be nice.

Thanks

I read you all loud and clear. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
I have to say that it's unlikely there will be a 'section on Linux' any time soon simply because I don't cover operating systems in general terms, so there's no reason for a 'Linux section'.
What I am trying to do is to give Linux more 'equal time' when I do talk about how an OS interacts with the hardware. Bear in mind however that since I don't use Linux myself, it's tough for me to say anything intelligent about it.
Since most Linux users are very well-informed, chances are the typical Linux reader on this site knows far more about its operation than I do, which makes my writing about it of marginal value. Hope that makes sense.
(I do use UNIX, am using it as I type this, but just not Linux on the desktop.)

Maybe I misunderstand the original post, but I thought the request was simply for a new forum here dedicated to Linux. The UBB admin could do that in a couple minutes. Stick it under 'General Hardware' or 'Miscellaneous' -- certainly not under 'Troubleshooting' because we don't need to do that with Linux http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thank You! I'm only a newbie myself with linux on the desktop -- been using it for a few months -- but I REALLY like it. I only wish there were more apps being made for it. Granted it's not for everyone but for all you former DOS geeks out there, don't delay, try it today.

Thanks again.

Oh, and one other thing (sysop, I hope you don't mind this plug for another site) For those of you looking for technical help with linux, there are many good resources out there, including a discussion board at http://www.linuxquestions.org/. Not as active in terms of users compared to the great site, but people are helpful and it is intended for those new to the OS.

ok, so WHERE IS IT?????????????????????????????????

Charles I have not seen one thing suggested here even ever added or even properly addressed.

As this is your site, you can do (or not do) anything you want, but I am beginning to think this "Suggestion" section should be renamed to "Useless waiste of Time Section", or "Things that will never be"......... I don't think I will post anything here anymore-(this section) as it is always IGNORED. I have not seen anything come from posting something here. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

sea69, I am sorry that I have not been able to live up to your expectations lately.
I do in fact read and appreciate the suggestions that are made here. Under normal circumstances I have responded to suggestions placed in this forum within a day or two. The last month has not been normal around here, however.
A new baby and a wife recovering from delivering same has put the entire load of this household on my shoulders. At the same time, I have dealt with the worst spring weather in 50 years, company coming to visit to see the baby, keeping the web site running in general, trying to finish off an overdue site update, and trying to maintain a schedule of writing material for upcoming updates. Add to this server outages, lots of email, trying to go to the chat room on occassion, and a nasty cold, and I haven't really been "myself" for a few weeks.
Now, I don't post this to get sympathy, but since you seem to think that I don't care about the forums, rest assured that I do. I am just overloaded at present.
An overhaul of the forums was promised and will occur, hopefully some time in the next week or two. I was about to do it when the baby came. I do not want to take this step until I have the time to do it properly, for the sake of everyone who uses the site.
Again, I apologize for not responding as quickly as I normally would like to.

I knew IMMEDIATELY after I posted that, that it would be unpopular.. and I deffinately could have been a bit more 'softspoken' on it....

But it was in my opinion a VALID 'issue', as I am VERY FAST to point out ALL of the FABULOUSLY GREAT HARD WORK that has gone into this site, I also feel that a SUGGESTION box is meant to be posted in as well.

and looking back since the START of the suggestion box, I saw little if anything addressed ( acted on) by the only person that can actually DO something. (as Charles is the only admin for his site http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif)

it is not a question of 'site loyalty', or being unappreciative- however I am CERTAIN that Charles himself would be the first to tell anyone that this Site/ Board, is ALSO a business, and he needs to have feedback BOTH good AND not good, I love this site as much as anyone else does I CAN ASSURE YOU.

so I see no reason for anyone to get defensive/offensive as my post was to CHARLES, and he answered it.. and I have replied.

I'm pretty sure that Charles knows no disrespect was intended.

on a lighter note, I am VERY popular at dinner parties, as I will ALWAYS blurt out WHATEVER comes to mind. lol http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

on a lighter note, I am VERY popular at dinner parties, as I will ALWAYS blurt out WHATEVER comes to mind. lol

And when it's insulting, obnoxious and derogatory I get steamed and you know it. Your post was all of the above and I did not like it one bit. this is a Suggestion Box, not a bitch box, and when you or anyone else posts derogatory remarks about anyone participating in these forums in any capacity I always let it be known that I do not appreciate it.

I think your comments were rude, unnecessary, insulting and out of line. The only reason I let it pass the first time is Charles had already posted an explanation, you had replied with an apology and I thought the matter was dropped. Now you want to stir it up some more...

There is a definite distinction between useful feedback, good or bad, and outright insults. Your comments fell in the latter category and were not appreciated. The post may have been directed toward Charles in particular, but as moderator I do have a responsibility to try and keep things rolling smoothly and as you know I always defend and stand behind the good people who contribute their knowledge and hard work toward making the forums the best on the net.

What you do at dinner parties is your business but here you will be expected to treat people with the same respect and consideration as everyone else. Insulting or derogatory remarks will receive the same response from me as if they were made by a newcomer just looking to stir up trouble. Keep your insults to yourself, and as I have recommended before:

Think twice, type once.

(Insert memorable Rodney King quote here...)
Folks, let's all just take it easy here...
Pete, thanks for coming to my defense. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I understand why you didn't like what sea69 wrote; frankly, I didn't either. At the same time, I do want people to feel that they can be open and say what's on their mind here.
sea69, I think the problem that some may have is not with what you said, but rather with how you said it. It's certainly fine to be upset or disappointed, but lashing out in the manner that you did is not going to get you what you want any faster.
That said, I do appreciate your feedback. And hopefully we can all get back to more constructive things and not let this turn into anything ugly.

PS the claim that "little if anything" has been addressed based on suggestions here is false. I don't really feel like wasting time documenting them, but many changes have been made based on feedback here. Others will occur when the forum layout is shuffled.

let me let you in on a LITTLE secret PETE

YOU are NOT GOD or someones parent here.

AND YOUR ENTIRE REPLY to ME was RUDE!!

and just because someone DOES NOT agree with you or says something that you do not like doesnt give you the right to frikkin CRUCIFY someone here.

GET OFF YOUR PULPIT.

I WILL NOT be rediculed from you here, you have gone WAY too FAR.

and the one stirring things UP is YOU. I would suggest that YOU follow YOUR OWN advice Think twice, Type Once"

as by your VENOMOUS response, you Pete- did not let me try to repair any feelings of 'attack' instead- you chose to 'Fan the Fire'. As you know every action causes a reaction.

There is a definite distinction between useful feedback, good or bad, and outright insults. Your comments fell in the latter category and were not appreciated. The post may have been directed toward Charles in particular, but as moderator I do have a responsibility to try and keep things rolling smoothly and as you know I always defend and stand behind the good people who contribute their knowledge and hard work toward making the forums the best on the net.

now if you thought that being what YOU CALL insulting- was a BAD thing.. and have turned around and DONE THE SAME THING to me that you have INTERPRETED as being wrong, then where's the logic??

I think your're taking yourself a bit too seriously.

and Charles- no-one needed to "come to your defense", because you personally were not under attack.

Now, Pete.. you have the "hammer" here.. but I would advise YOU to use it wisely.

if this idiocy continues I will just go.

this ENTIRE thing has been blown WAY out of proportion here.. starting to feel like I'm in the X-Soviet Union.. no free speach.. I dont think its fair to DISSECT everything anyone says.

Oh boy, here we go. This is exactly the sort of thing I did not want to happen.
Sea, Pete is not "God" but he is the moderator of these forums. You may not always agree with what he does, but he does a bang-up job here generally and is very much responsible for these forums being some of the most useful and flame-free around. Check out some other BBSes if you don't believe me.
That said, I don't think anything is gained by people fighting over which one was more insulting. Pete was trying, in his way, to tell you that there are better ways of accomplishing what you want.
Now, that said, let's look at what has been accomplished. Your complaint was that I hadn't done yet some of the things I want to do. Instead of making this point in a constructive way, you did it in a confrontational manner. As a result, I have been forced to waste over an hour of my day dealing with this--time taken directly from work I was doing for the site.
I would prefer that everyone calm down and be cooperative than the fighting continue or anyone leave the forums.
