View Full Version : Splitting long threads

I have seen several other boards where really long threads are split into several pages, automatically, I assume. I was just wondering if this feature was available and just hadn't been 'turned on' or if you didn't want it. I think it would be helpful on some of the long topics we've been encountering lately, some well above 50 posts.

I don't really want to add more work for you right now, just was trying to get your thoughts on it.

Hi mjc,
This is one of those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" things that all BBSes seem to have to deal with.
It can be set in the system to do that. The problem is that if you turn it on, a lot of people don't like having to scroll through multiple pages to find all of the discussion. Also, it's very easy to accidentally not notice that there is a second page of replies.
So I decided to turn it off, since most of the threads here are short. (Some BBSes have threads with hundreds of messages.) Where are all the long threads? I've only seen a few...
Thanks for the suggestion.

There have been few a couple of weeks ago but they seem to have shortened up again, and then I guess that goes in spurts. I was to a couple of other boards and it seemed ok but I guess I was realy jus wondering how it worked more than really getting on here. I agree most of them are pretty short and the multiple page wouldn't really do anything about long replies because it is based upon a certain number of posts, right?

Yep, the ones I've seen have been based on a certain number of posts, which I'm sure can be set however the creator of the page wishes. I think the ones I've seen have been set for about 30 posts or so, then it creates a new page.

It works fairly well, but Charles does have a very good point, it's very easy to miss the second page. Been there, done that...

Here I don't think it's been much of a problem with loading time, we occasionally see a long post, I seem to remember at least one with about 50 replies, but that's the exception rather than the rule, normally they don't run much more than about 10 or so.

Six of one, half dozen of the other...
