Hello. I hope someone can help me. I'm experiencing USB failure on my Laptop. Toshiba Satellite A105 S1013, XP SP2. No USB device I plug in will work. MP3 player, Palm, WACOM, Camera. The comp sees the device but reports errors. It is the same on all 4 ports. Could anyone suggest where I should start looking for the problem? I can provide any more information necessary.

Thanks for any help, Keith

Is that XP Home or Pro?

What are the error saying ?
Have you tried the latest driver updates for the laptop ?
Are the USB ports enabled in the BIOS ?

In "Device Manager"...
When you "View >> Devices by connection"...
And highlight the PC symbol at the top of the tree and click "Numlock + *" & "Numlock" again [to expand the tree]...
Under...
Standard PC
___PCI Bus...

Does the USB branch and sub-branches look OK?
If not what are the errors shown, and what are the causes given in the devices' "Properties"?

e.g. Here's mine...

Thanks for the replies. Some devices work ok, some are recognized but Windows says the device isn't installed properly, others don't show up at all. I tried to initiate Sync between the PC and my Palm, which wasn't being recognized and it rebooted the system. Most error messages say a device isn't installed properly. Pretty vague.

All devices (Palm, MP3 player, WACOM tablet, Numeric keypad) work fine on 2 other systems.

Here is the Device manager. I'm suspicious of the High Definition Audio driver.

So you need a driver for the "SDMX1 MP3 Player" that's compatible with the Windows version you're running [XP SP2].
Do you have one?

I did a search and found this UK driver download page for the SanDisk SDMX1 (http://www.sandisk.co.uk/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1088).
But the driver on offer is only for Win98SE!

Well I've installed the correct driver but the system still reports errors. And the MP3 player is just one example. No USB device works properly on my system. I also updated the BIOS to no avail. I'm still trying to figure out what the "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" is. The system identifies it as new hardware, but every driver update fails.

"No USB device works properly on my system"
This has to be a significant clue.
Is there a setting in the BIOS Seup that can disable USB?
And is it set as disabled?

"I've installed the correct driver but the system still reports errors"
Now that is strange if true!
What makes you think the driver is the corect one?
The "Properties" page reports that the device is "not configured correctly".
I was assuming that meant there was no suitable driver installed.
I wonder if what it really means is that the driver ".inf" file includes unsuitable configuration settings?
Is that practically the same thing as an unsuitable driver?

"still trying to figure out what the "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" is"
Is the modem part of the sound card?
Why the question mark I wonder?
What does it say in "Properties" about it?
Perhaps the closest driver that the driver wizard can find for it is really not a very good match.
[Windows driver wizard will settle for the best driver it can find if there is no perfect match to the hardware]

Thanks for taking the time on this. I downloaded Realtek Audio Driver from the Toshiba website. and since installing that and rebooting everything seems to work ok right now. My Google search revealed the Hi Def Audio Bus is related to the realtek driver, so maybe it was corrupted. I'll keep testing it to verify it is solid. Thanks again.

I thought you said this was a usb problem? I've never "heard" (pun intended)
of audio drivers curing a connectivity issue before...
