Mate wanted an old pc upgrades so his kids could use it . No brand name , amd 950mgz 30gb hd , 256 mem , asus a7 pro mainboard . This system was fine with win me but wiped it & installed win xp , all files loaded ok bar the dvd which is not recognised in My computer but is shown in the bios , have also tried new cables new cdrom all with the same outcome . Reinstalled me & it works fine , also did an upgrade install with the same results , also when xp loads the option to join an network in system properties is greyed out ,

You should have run Windows XP Upgrade Advisor (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx) from within WinME.
Could you still do that?
If XP runs, do it within XP.
That will report all likely hardware/software incompatibilities.

Have however solved it , by making the DVD slave to the hd Master , the secondry ide drive will not recognise anything once windows boots even though its listed in the bios & obviously boots from the drive to load windows , so that is still a mystery but it is working at least . Its only for extra pc so they both can be on the net .

Hmmm...the secondary IDE controller might be history...
