I just decided that the "error" message in the preceeding thread needed to be changed to something more positive! :)

A sharp bread knife, I suspect.

Actually, as a cartoon I saw recently indicated, unsliced bread is probably a greater (and rarer) thing these days... Fresh bread out of the oven - tear off chunks - smear with butter - dip in honey.... Much better than sliced bread!! :D :D

Well...you've a definitely a point there! Some breads are also better if sliced thicker. You're kinda stuck if they're a standard width...
And, too, pulling chunks is pretty tough if the bread is thin sliced.
Hmmm...time to rethink methinks...

Well my mom makes a homemade bread that's awesome! Been making it for m-a-n-y years. Everybody raves about it. Well it isn't easy to slice it thin to fit in a regular toaster and besides, it doesn't fit well size wise either.
So the best thing since sliced bread has to be the toaster we finally found that does thick oversized bread slices :D
Mmm-mm!! <--- That's 2 syllables. :p

Sliced bread also provides for ease of sandwich making and probably led to a fortune for the person who developed zip lock or sandwich bags. And, toasted bread would have been a bit difficult. I suspect that "breaking bread" proportionately would probably be considered an art form...
Sliced Bread - Otto Frederick Rohwedder
Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented the bread slicer, which he started working on in 1912. At first, Rohwedder came up with the idea of a device that held the slices together with hat pins (not a success). In 1928, he designed a machine that sliced and wrapped the bread to prevent the sliced bread from going stale. Pre-sliced bread was popularized by Wonder Bread in 1930, helping to spread the toaster's popularity further.

In the area where I live it's been getting more and more difficult to find good bread for sale.
When I was a youngster we had a local bakery that made fresh bread and rolls every day.
More recently, the village I now live in had a local bakery until about 1990.
That closed.
There still remained a local bakery in a small town about 5 miles away.
They had an excellent baker who made really good bread.
He was made an offer [of pay] that he couldn't refuse, so went to work for a large supermarket that produces rather indifferent bread.
The shop he had worked in closed.
Until quite recently there was a shop in Edinburgh that sold excellent bread, but their supply baker went out of business.
Now even the best bread to be found in Edinburgh just doesn't reach the former level of quality and flavour.
We can still get decent rolls in our local greengrocer supplied by a baker in Linlithgow.
They don't quite match the rolls of old, but at least they are worth eating.
My wife will eat no others; she cannot bring herself to eat that other stuff.

I suspect like many things, although folks realize the uniqueness of a product, price ultimately becomes the determining factor. Although many are willing to fork over the dough for the better product, the numbers are not high enough to sustain the cost of labor...
