Hey guys,

I never new a site like this existed, there is a wealth of info to be had. A friend turned me on to it after I relayed a computer glich that has me at end of the rope.

I have a one month old Acer Aspire 380 running Vista. For 2 weeks it was an ideal home system that did all of the family asked of it. then, for some unknown reason the DVD/CD-rom drive stops working. I take it back to retailer, they scratch their heads and load the hard drive info onto a new machine. OK, good as new. One week later, same problem. I figure, what the heck, uninstall driver and install a new one. Windows shows that the driver is up to date. But on Device Manager it says "Device will not start, Error code 10". I have tried everything I know, nothing has worked.

It seems there is some issue that the Nvidia GForce 6100 card is having with windows vista.

But I have no idea what steps I should follow and what driver to get, where to get or how to install. Do I need to actually unplug the device, delete from device manager, then get the driver?

If anyone has any input it would be helpful. I am prepared to smash it with a hammer and send it to ACER(they had no clue on tech support line).

This is so reminiscent of the upperfilters lowerfilters registry problem in WinXP that you might want to try it out and apply the same registry tweak or patch in vista.

Had you installed any software just prior to the onset?

Paul,

I thought the cause was one of the kids older PC games, the drive stopped working right after I loaded it on. But-I made sure it never got on the replacement computer.

I'll check out your links,

thanks,

chris

Genius at work.

Something that in a bazillion years I would never have been able to troubleshoot. I literally have been to Microsoft, Nvidia, Acer, off and on for the better part of a week. If I had a nickel for everytime I googled "Error Code 10" and various other phrases I would send all of them to you.

Email me your address so I can send you a gift certificate to the Outback:D

And I'm serious.

thanks mucho,

chris

Judging by your happiness I presume it worked - its useful to know for sure for future advice. I googled for upperfilters + vista ;) knowing this crops up so often under WinXP.

The gift certificate is the :D that you have already displayed. And yes it was a real outback until the recent effects of the celtic tiger whereby city folk are building second houses all over the rural landscape.

I can't say thanks enough.:)

I think 90% of the issue with searching for a answer to a frustrating problem is knowing where to ask for help.
