Help

My desktop PC got hit with a power surge. I had a TrippLite surge supressor but it didnt work. The power supply smelled like it burned so I replaced it with a new one and the PC still will not boot. when I turn the power on, the only thing that happens is the fan on the CPU and in the power supply runs, and that's about it. Nothing else happens.

Should I replace the motherboard and CPU, or just the motherboard and keep the CPU? Any way of testing to see which it is?

If it's not the power supply it has to be the CPU or motherboard right?

Its' an AMD Athlon 64 CPU with one of those ATX style motherboards.

thanks

Cut all the hardware down to a bare-bones boot by detaching all unnecessary peripherals. In fact take everything out except for the CPU and heat-sink and see if you get warning beeps. You should do with all RAM removed.

If no beep and you used to get beeps its at least mobo and possibly CPU and possibly other hardware.

Any way of testing to see which it is? The only way I have used is trial and error with a new mobo - which after the PSU and Modem (in the case of telephone line hit by lightning) - as the first item on my list.

Clear the CMOS memory before you attempt a barebones boot. Actually, start off by clearing CMOS, then go ahead with the barebones boot if nothing changes.
