I confess some lack of experience w/the two media players above.
I use Media Player most of the time, but now have a new camera (digital) which uses Quicktime....
When I download QT it takes over and becomes me default player.
I do not wish this, but for some reason in XP cannot find a method of resetting to MP as my default.
What am I missing????
Thanks Gandy

Start> Programs> Accessories> Windows Explorer> Tools tab> Folder Options> File Types tab.
Highlight the file you wish to change association to open with in the window, click 'Change' button, then browse to your desired application. Click or enable 'Always open with' box and Ok your way out.
You may also need to change icon in the same area
BTW, I use RealAlternative instead of Realtime,, Media player Classic and QuickTime Alternative.

I'll pursue this.....have been really distracted by assignments and jobs and responsibilites, thus unable to invest the time to find why I could not fix it....
Will try your suggestions.

O.K. - Now I am getting really PO'd.
I have set the settings in Windows for MPEG and Video/MPEG to Real Player. I also set the types in QT to NOT be QT......
However, the mpegs still come up as QT which has a lousy picture.
I cannot find another place to set/unset these choices.
Suggestions?
Thanks

Ditch it and install the programs I mention above. You can even ditch WMP if you so desire if you have an alternate way of ripping cd's (if needed).
What's this dumb camera that requires QT? Are you sure that's the only thing that will play or upload the files? For my digital still camera, I do not even install the bundled software, I just copy the files with XP to my HDD from a card reader or the camera itself.

Right click on a video clip / choose open with / choose program / scroll until you find desired application / choose application and tick where it says 'always use the selected program........'
BTW, I avoid QT since I find it very intrusive.
Good luck

I uninstalled QuickTime years ago [way back at Windows 95 in 1997], when I found it behaved very badly in grabbing all the settings to itself [and not letting go of them when uninstalled!]
Now have "QuickTime Alternative" installed.
Don't think I've got everything perfectly arranged; just make changes as necessary.
Know how to register file types so the default device is this or that.
Can do it from outside of the registry [using Windows Explorer], or inside regedit [more risky].
Notice mpeg files are "Opened" and "Played" by "Windows Media Player", and qt files are opened by "Media Player Classic".
Unfortunately neither Media Player Classic nor QuickTime Alternative will totally effectively play the only qt [video] file I have on my PC [just tried both of them].
The only player I ever found that would make a reasonable job of it on my [old, slow] PC was an older version of the QuickTime player.
Tried out various old versions before I found one that worked not too bad.

Can we get a group......."DUH"?????
Sorry gang.....my bad.....Got rid of QT.....still had the same request for QT for everything moviewise.....then I realized.....I Use FireFox!
The individual settings in Mozilla had been reset to QT.....changed em, and off we go!
Old brain have brain farts.....this was mine.
Now off to the recommended software to get rid of the problems with "standards" like RP & QT......
One final thought.....I was amazed that QT picked up on Mozilla's product and was set to change it! Pretty much in touch, those QT folks.....except when it comes to actually satisfying customers!
Thanks one and all for input.
