I have windows xp home sp2 and the file is video wizard.rar

.rar files are archive files that need to be unrarred just as zip files need to be unzipped. They are more commonly used under linux than windows so are you sure you have obtained the correct file.

What is the file for and where did it come from?

yes Paul i know,but that is just it ,when i try to unrar I get this msge of
not a valid win32 application.This is a video editing software and i got it from my friend who is using it also.He had no problems installing it.so did my other friend.

Possibly its a bad copy or download. You can check its MD5 and compare that with your friend's original to see if they are identical or simply just try another copy.

MD5Hash (http://www.toast442.org/md5/) would do this. Set radio button to checksum and drag n drop the relevant file onto the GUI.

well i had my friend u/l this file and he installed it without any problem so it is not the file.omitted to tell you i did a clean install of win xp home sp2,explorer 6,and outlook 6.I also d/l all of the updates and security features.
so maybe this has something to do with it.Like the updates

Thinking about it - it's more likely to be the unpacker app, WinRar or whatever, rather than the .rar file itself.

Try 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) or Zip Genius (http://www.zipgenius.it/eng/?page_id=3) maybe.

right you were.it was the unpacker.got a new one and installed the file without any problems.tyvm
