My microphone used to work but ever since I formatted my hard drive it doesn't any more. It's plugged in, it isn't muted, I have the latest drivers, the volume isn't all the way down, I tried my friends microphone... I've googled the problem and tried everything those pages suggested but nothing is working. I'm normally pretty good with computers but for the life of me I can't figure this out! Perhaps someone out there can recommend something I've overlooked somehow. Please help!

Does your friend's mike work?
Not sure but maybe something in Device manager showing an error? Also try Start> Run> dxdiag See if anything there can lend a clue.
What os? What mike?

No, my friend's mike doesn't work. All of my devices are showing that they're working properly with the correct drivers. dxdiag didn't seem to show anything out of the ordinary... I'm using Windows XP sp2 with a RadioShack mic.

I've had a breakthrough that might help us out. While I was testing out different things I decided to reinstall my webcam that has a mic attached to it. The mic built into the webcam seems to be working properly but it's connected through USB... So it seems the problem lies somewhere in my sound card (built into my motherboard). I've checked all the device settings and everything checks out but still no response from the mic.

See if the MSN Messenger [or Netmeeting] "Tools->Auto Tuning Wizard" will do anything for you.
