Hello Everyone: I just noticed that when I right click my gmail talk icon and click check my mail, it opens with firefox instead of the usual IE6. How can I get it to open with IE6? I have IE set as default. Thanks

I can switch between IE and Firefox from Start >> All Programs >> Set Program Access and Defaults >> Select Custom and expand it >> Select Internet Explorer as Default Web Browser and click OK.

You can always try One then the other and then go back to the first one to try to reset things all over.

Thanks Paul, but as I mentioned I already have IE set as default.
It's when I have Google Talk screen up and I click on Help (on that screen) it comes up in Firefox not IE6?
I would like all to come up in IE6!!

I know you have set it that way but it can get "stuck" so toggle it to set firefox and then reset it back to IE. No guarantees but it has always worked for me. If the registry cant be updated that way then its not easy to reset the associations regardless of what they apparently are set to do.

Paul, I am new at this firefox browser, I opened firefox and it had a tab at the bottom in tools, options and it asked if I wanted to check to see it firefox was the default and I clicked on it and it said it was not the default and do I want to make it my default, so I said Yes, so now it is the default but I dont know how to get it off firefox as default.
I went into IE6 and it is still checked as default browser.
So I dont get it nothing seems to have changed.
How can I get firefox to NOT be the default? Thanks, Tom

There are a number of ways. One is to go the route I suggested using "Set Program Access and Defaults" but you can also open the same applet by entering into the run box:
control.exe appwiz.cpl,,3

You can also go to the Internet Options from the tools menu in IE or from the Control Panel and under the Programs Tab check the box "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default browser" and also click the button to "Make Default".

No definite idea but sometimes when file associations go wrong it can be hard to repair them without doing a specific registry tweak - and I'm not sure just what this would be in this case. I currently have an annoyance whereby html files show the correct icon but htm files show a generic one. This is a similar type of issue but I never seem to get round to be able to correct it. It doesn't matter how often I open htm files with a variety of applications, the icon never changes, yet for html files they swap around with no problem.

Short of finding the correct registry tweak or of using system restore I guess that a reinstall may be the only full solution.

Maybe try the dougknox's htm/html file association (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm) fix. I've got my icons back to normal after running it and then repairing the icons with a TweakUI for XP fix - which didn't work prior to running the dougknox fix.

Reset Web Settings (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Talk:Default_browser) is yet another approach.
