XP for me, hands down. I do, however, prefer Linux over XP.

I'd take ME over Vista anyday. IMO, MS is trying to outdo their own fiasco from lack of support (ME) to lack of hardware and software compatibility (Longhorn/Vista). How low can they go?!?!
I had to pick XP in the poll. I've been using it now for awhile and I'm finally brainwashed. :o
No more 9x except on my slower, non internet pc's such as GPS setups on laptops for back woods camping-fishing excursions. Of all the 9x versions, it's ME for ease of use. 98SE was stable, but a PIA to use, especially modify.

I voted for WinXP because I've been using it the longest. Out of all the Windows versions, I've spent more time on XP. Probably more than 98SE and 2000 combined! XP just plain works for me. And around our house, if it can't run XP, it runs a Linux workstation distro. :D Or it gets thrown out...
Vista is... something else...
I must admit that if I weren't a gamer, I would have left Windows long ago. Maybe not completely, but almost entirely. Vista represents that bold new step in PC gaming platform evolution. But beyond that, I've seen little use for Vista so far. It runs really really well on the latest hardware, but the OS alone can't hold your attention forever...
M$ made a big gamble on Vista, and so far they're losing. It was expected that old software would no longer work. It wasn't expected that new Vista-version software would not be available the day Vista was officially released. What happened to all the new software that should have existed by now? All I can say is "WTF?" The technology world really dropped the ball this time, which is surprising since new standards (and even new would-be standards) are almost always engulfed the moment they're mentioned! BluRay and HD-DVD? They did it right. Vista? Not so right.

I actually liked ME, but it and its predecessors, by design, had a problem releasing resources. If you left the computer on for long periods of time (day or so) problems developed. The only recourse was to reboot to reset the system resources.
I can count on one hand the number of times I've had to warm boot the system due to a software freeze-up that I couldn't shut down with XP...

Windows 95. It was so simple...

With one exception (that being product activation) and assuming proper hardware resources then WinXP every time. It has had its bugs and its detractors but it has been by the far the most stable Windows I have used; why at times it almost seems to repair itself. I liked Win2000 as well but with one exception again and that was that I found it slow to boot-up and close down. For any version of Windows the favorite can only be matched to the relevant hardware at one's disposal and very often people have been disappointed because they used the MINIMUM requirements.
I would have migrated to Linux long ago too but for different reasons than Saphalline and this is because of a trap that helps keep MS going. Both from a software development point of view and because I troubleshoot other peoples systems things have had to be mostly MS orientated because that's where most of the work comes from and one has to stay abreast of developments.
Vista is a big unknown because much will depend on whether enough software development will go into it wholeheartedly. The .NET Framework has been a resounding failure in take-up by software development under earlier versions of Windows since the Windows APIs are so well known. If MS sees such the future being based on software writers changing in large numbers to support non-familiar platforms then that is where they may well have miscalculated; up to now the software writers have themselves been sucked-in to the self-sustaining MS loop.

I think Windows XP is the most normal version

In one year, i would say VISTA will bury XP in the dust-
The software/hardware is slow to evolve with VISTA, but i think in one year they will get it right and VISTA will be better than XP
So i voted for Vista- if only for DX10

XP Pro is my favorite OS, however also XP Home.
XP is very stable(for a MS OS) - something that can't really be said for their latest offering(Vista).
Win98SE is my 2nd choice, but it tends to be a little unstable at times.
Win95B is my 3rd choice, due to it's simplicity - something already touched on by another member here - and I still use Win95 for some basic tasks...
