View Full Version : Nero
I was recommended Nero for editing, managing, compressing, and burning all sorts of data onto CDs. I bet there are many other great, even greater, applications at the particular tasks. I don't know much about the computer, so please teatch me my friends.
Thanks

Hmmm,
I mostly use NERO these days but have used Adaptec's, now Roxio's, several versions, even XP's native drag and drop burning option. There's loads of other programs out there, and I see them recommended here quite often. Some free, some share, some pay.
I guess it all would boil down to how or what you plan to do with it, and how easy an interface you would prefer. The basic Roxio is quite simple, but it lacks more complex task abilities. There are also simple installs of NERO that I have placed on a few pc's.
By 'compress', I assume you mean creating dvd's because this is a normal function of converting from avi files to dvd which is a compressed version of an avi.
If you could be a little more specific in your query, there could be other answers you may need.

Something that's totally FREE, and you may find interesting to try is...
The K3b (http://www.elearnit.de/knoppix/docs/tutorial/english/k3b.html#k3b) burning program included in Linux distributions such as the Knoppix Linux Live CD (http://www.knoppix.net/get.php).
You'd need both a CD-reader and a CD-burner installed.
Then you could load and run Knoppix from its bootable CD in a CD-reader, and burn a CD in the CD-burner.
Haven't done it myself [because the Knoppix CD won't boot in my reader], but I'd like to hear of experiences of someone who tried it.
There might [or might not] be problems with lack of memory space because Knoppix runs in a RAMdrive [no swap file on the HDD].
I've tried K3b within a Mandriva Linux Free 2007 (http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/free) installation on my HDD and liked what I saw.
Used Adaptec before, which worked well and was impressive, but I'm at present using "HP RecordNow" and that seems OK.
Never come across a burning program I didn't like.

The full version of Nero is the killer app in this regard as far as I am concerned - though most people dont need all its functions. The Nero Express and other Express interfaces make using it pretty straightforward. The majority of CD or DVD burners that you buy nowadays comes bundled with software that is more than adequate for most users. A useful and small windows freebie is ImgBurn (http://www.majorgeeks.com/ImgBurn_d4870.html).
