Hi everyone! I have a major dilema! I was browsing on the internet for this silly dancing banana. I know nothing about computers, and I found what I wanted. I didn't know how to save it to my pc. I was expecting it to go into a file, and I'd be able to use the "dancing banana" on another forum to make a friend laugh. However, the option I chose did not do that. Now I have this DANCING BANANA on my desktop, and I CAN'T get it off. I've been trying for hours. I've been searching for the file... can't find it. I right clicked on the image, and selected save as a desktop item, and there it was. Needless to say, I'm not laughing and I'm still unable to make my friend smile out of all this. Can someone PLEASE tell me how to get this thing off? I thought as I was going through all these help menus that it said since I selected that option I made my pc available for users of that site to view? I don't know.... but I'm worried. And this dancing banana is no longer cute to me! Please help!

dont worry... its easy done :)

make a right click on the free desktop, then choose "properties". In one of the options you can choose the background image. Just select "None", and the banana is gone :)

Well, I did that actually. It didn't work. I had a picture up from christmas and it deleted that one from my desktop but not the banana! He's still there, and its like he's taunting me! Dancing with his little sombrero! hahaha! I'm lost.:)

Try this:
Got to Start> My Computer> (C): drive> Documents and Settings> (whichever user account that you can find the following)> Desktop> find the file and delete by highlighting it and then using the delete key.

I have other ideas but I'll need to see later, I'm the character in Alice in Wonderland with the pocket watch... ;)

 I've been looking EVERYWHERE...and it isn't there either. Thank you for trying to help me.

Sounds like it may be a script. Can you remember where you found it? Post it here if so.

You could try a HijackThis (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) log and we'll see what is running. Many years ago there was a script that flipped your Desktop upside down. Norton's called it malicious but all it was done for was a joke. Escape key cancelled it easy but it still needed to be unistalled or deleted in other ways..

Is this a shortcut icon or a full picture somehow embedded onto the desktop?

Screenshot maybe??

Yes! Its a full image. Its a three inch tall banana with a sombrero and he's dancing away! Not an icon.

Okay, I put this in.... and its bringing up a bunch of stuff. What am I looking for? What does this all mean?

Okay, I looked at all the screen savers that came up. It not in any of them. Its not a screensaver. Its an image on my desktop. Thank you so much though, that was good thinkin'. I really appreciate the help! :)

The program/process that's producing this dancing banana image must be using some CPU capacity to do that.

So install Process Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx), and run it.
Make certain there is nothing else running to use any substantial CPU capacity.
Then look/see if there is anything using perhaps about 5% CPU capacity.

Once you've identified what's running to cause this you can decide what to do about it.
You could highlight the process, right-click it, and choose "Kill Process Tree" as a start.

To display the desktop image to us
You could use the Print Screen Key
Open Paint and choose Paste
Cut and re-paste the appropriate part (if you want to)
Save the deskop image file somewhere that suits
Upload the same file to www.tinypic.com (or similar)
Paste the image's location using the picture icon in the Reply to thread box

It does look like an embedded pic in desktop wallpaper that could be being regenerated from a bit of malware running at startup.

Knock knock. Anyone home?

See my post above.

Ouch! :(

So Paul's agreeing with you. :)

But is adding [what I was intending to say later depending on what was found running] that it may be in the Startup list.

If so, then Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) could be installed and used to stop it running at Startup [and also permanently delete the settings that start it].

...there is a whole lot of things being thrown out there now. As I said I'm pretty ignorant to this stuff. All these program things I am being told to download and such.... are they safe? What would happen if I did follow the steps and deleted the wrong thing? Which process should I even start with. I think there are three named above....

As long as you don't checkmark anything in HijackThis and click on fix, you are safe because you haven't done anything. All I am asking for you to do is post a log here in a reply so we can analyze it and recommend a course of action.

So change into your johnny like a good patient and sit up on the examining table, the doctor will be right in... ;)

I have just reproduced this several times..
Mind, it took my CPU usage to 100% and slowed my pc right down!

The guilty party appears to be this GIF file:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:DancingBanana_With_a_Sombrero.gif

I had it set as desktop background etc (and bl**dy annoying it is too)!!
To get rid, all I did was as already suggested, go to desktop properties and reset it to "None"..
Then search for the file:DancingBanana_With_a_Sombrero.gif and deleted it.. all ok again now!..;)

I wasn't really agreeing or disagreeing that it was due to a script as such. It's the pedantry in me maybe, but all scripts are not malware and all malware are not scripts. Sorry if it was thought to be tautology and I had read and noted the previous posts.

It sounds like an embedded pic and it all depends whether it was placed there as a one-off (if so FredF's fix should work) or whether it is constantly regenerated following its removal - a thing that happens surprisingly frequently with those that visit porn sites, without protection, and then have the embarrasment of something much worse than a banana sitting on their desktops.

This might pull up alot, but let's try this: *.*gif

Enter this into Search for files and folders...

It sounds like this is the samething that Fruss messed with, so I suspect that perhaps your search parameters were slightly askew...

Download "Unlocker" then go to desktop item and right click and the option to "delete" will be there. Download here>>>

That looks like a 404 to me but this link (http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=Unlocker&btnG=Google+Search) works! Take your pick! Nice program! Hope it works.

I seriously must be the dumbest woman on the planet. I downloaded this, and went to all programs, tried to open unlocer assistant.... and nothing is happening.
However, when I went to the link you posted. The annoying message that is given as example.... I had that once, before I posted on here. There was some sort of file that I could not open. I forget the file name but I knew it has to do with this banana. I sent it to my trash, then deleted it. And nothing happened.

Now that you have it installed
just right click on the banana and choose delete.
