As much as I appriciate the e-mail I have received from members here lately, I would enjoy it more if I saw these responses HERE instead of my personal e-mail.
I put my addy here so people can get ahold of me but, I feel that these discusions would be better posted on the forums.

I hope nobody takes this as I am unsociable, but most of the mail I get, gets deleted due to lack of interest in all the junk that goes around. Also, I don't use any Antivirus so, as you can guess, I am very cautious. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Anyway, again, Thanks for the positive responses http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Pete; if this is in the wrong place, go ahead and move me around http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Just wanted you to know that someone read this. Let's hope that those who were asking you stuff "off" board read it too. I have emailed some "off" a few times..but apologized profusely for breaching etiquette. Only received a couple "off" myself..happy for the Hotmail box.

On the no AV thing, though..where were you when I was getting pressured to get the AV???? I could have used someone on my side. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

LOL, sorry Kay I missed that one. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
5 years of being on-line and I have only gotten a couple minor Viri. And that was right in the begining (newbie).
If I were doing things that put me at a higher risk, I would probably run one at all times.

May I suggest what I do.
I setup an E-Mail account Just for use at this site.
It’s not given out anywhere else to anyone else.
It is for use only on the boards.

BTW. I didn’t run an AV program all the time till the last bunch of Virus waves started.
Before that it was only used as needed on new downloads. Today it runs all the time
This has more to do with the hardware being able to handle the work load then security

I agree that people should post technical questions on the site rather than in indivduals' email. I have had a notice in my signature for ages and I still get occasional questions by email anyway. I ask them to post a topic in the forums. My email address is posted on the site, although it might not be easy to find, if it were posted in each individual post, I'd never get out of email...

The main thing though, is that by asking a question on the forums, usually several very knowledgeable individuals will end up assisting. Six heads are definitely better than one...

Rick I think has the right idea.

#1) you sould NOT have your real email listed. (main account with your ISP)

make a hotmail or yahoo email available for those that want to contact you, and for those that you feel inclined - then give out your real email account.

Sea: Because of the long period of time that I went without any AV, I still don't give out my "real" addy. It is NOT because I don't trust the other person, it's because of all those viri that went through one's Address Book. If you are not in my Address Book here, I can't accidentally hurt you or someone in my Book who doesn't have AV. Also an alternate email gives you somewhere to send all the junk. Even when you are careful to search for all the "NO, don't send me junk mail" boxes, they often do anyway...my poor husband gets bunches and bunches...and some make it almost impossible to "unsubscribe" from their junk mail list.

as was recently posted here:

In OE, create a new entry in your address book. Name it "0000" (without the quotes)>> give it no email address>>.

This way when a trojan/script is trying to send out to everyone in your address book, it will be stopped at the 1st try.. because there is noway that OE can send to the #1 address "0000", as it does not exist. You will receive an error message from OE, alerting you that it is trying to send out mail to everyone without your permission.

very nice tip.

I learned of a neat anti virus tip today from a friend who downloads and cracks a lot of software.

He keeps a small "quarantine" partition on his HD. Stuff he downloads, he places in quarantine and scans it for viruses before installing or unpacking. I think this is clever, although I was the one who came up with the name. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Anyone else ever hear of this?
