I have a six year old system. Its got a 950MHz processor with 512MHz of RAM.

I plan on building my own PC for the first time in the near future. For now, if I was to purchase a new middle of the road $100 video card, would it most likely work in my older system?

Also, I have a problem watching some movies. The movies seem to run smoothly, but they appear as if only every third or fourth frame is showing. If newer video cards are compatible with my system, would one help movies look better? Thanks.

A system that old is not going to have a compatible slot for a modern vid card. You could get a PCI vid card and use it in both systems, but PCI vid cards are so far behind and so expensive for their limited performance that they're not worth it for today's graphical requirements. If you buy a vid card for your current 950MHz machine, you'll want to keep it there.

Thanks for saving me from needless shopping. :) I guess I'll start considering buying the parts I need for a new system.
