Merged the two threads into one appropriate forum.

When you place the valid XP disk in the optical drive it should be ready to format for XP. You simply follow the prompts from there.

In some newer models designed for vista
Vista prevents the system from booting off anything but the hard drive

Make sure your bios is set to boot from the cd-rom drive

Would you want to install a second hard drive and install XP onto that? That would give you a dual boot pc and leave the original one intact.

If its a new computer be aware of two things. Opening the box can void the warranty and that there may not be any XP drivers for new Vista-intended OEM hardware - so check that out first from the relevant website if it applies.

Windows XP Upgrade Advisor (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx).

That XP PRO link above is only good for

Upgrading from Previous Versions of Windows

In fact the adviser won't even install on XP Home 64bit

Are you sure?

I assumed it would run on any modern Windows system and check the suitability of the existing software and hardware for use with WinXP.
[I assume that because it would seem like the sensible thing for the designers to do]

So although it was originally intended for use as an UPGRADE advisor, it should perhaps be called an XP SUITABILITY advisor.
