I have a nasty feeling I may have been a bit uh....cavalier.....when clearing out some files on my hard drive. I'm running Win XP SP2.

PC doesn't 'feel' right. Everything works ok, but sometimes you just know somethings wrong but can't put your finger on it.

Anyway I was trying to connect to my sons PC via Direct IP for a game or two of Age of empires and it just wouldn't connect. I could 'see' his game on the multiplayer IP list but try as I might it would not connect.

It worked last week just fine. Now it won't work.

So, I start thinking about things I may have done since, like you do.

The only thing I can think of (barring an internet problem which I have checked and double checked) is that I may have been a little too zealous when having a clear out since then.

Ok I think to myself I'll try a system restore.

And guess what ? It won't run ! at all !

I've tried it under Safe mode, thru start/run/etc and thru the old alt-cntl-delete..........none of these will even start it.

Any ideas please folks ?

That's when I'd restore a recent good image of the Windows partition [C:].
If you don't have any backup images, begin taking an interest in learning how to do that; you'll bless the day you did. :)

If still having trouble try a Windows XP Repair Install (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm) with an SP2 slipstreamed XP CD (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#warning3).
