How about a button to mark all posts read. Cleans up the posts so you can view just the new ones from that point on. I think you have attempted this by using the new topics selection, but this is taking it one step further.
This site www.pigskinaddiction.com/boards/hogs/ikonboard.pl has what I'm talking about.

If you have your browser set to accept cookies it already does that by using a different color icon beside the topic. I think the yellow folder turns purple the next time you visit the forums, to indicate you have already read that topic. The ones you haven't read should have a yellow folder beside them. I have cookies turned off, so mine stay yellow. That makes it a bit more difficult for me to keep up with topics I have already read, but I generally tend to remember where I left off the previous day.
The link itself should also turn a different color once you have read it. You can also use the drop down box at top to set it to show only todays topics. That might clean up a few of them.

At the bottom of the main topics page and the individual topics pages is an explination of the Icon color changes and what you should see when topics are new or updated since your last visit. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
