View Full Version : User Profiles Needed

Hi, I use a webboard at Pinnaclesys.com where all users have in their profile their HW/SW/OS and other info relevant to the system(s) they use. That information is extremely helpful in understanding how others use their systems, and ESPECIALLY for others to help me use my system. The profile appears in each message header with the poster's ID and stats. It's fine to know what kind of geek Whozit from Portland is, but that space can be put to additional good use, especially for "How Do I" queries. What do you think?

Hello Swiecima and Welcome,
Your suggestion is a good one and has not been unnoticed. The only reply I can think of is that many people we have here have more than one system. It may become confusing or space consuming to list all specs of two or more systems.
It is recommended in the TIPS FOR Success when filling out a new subject, that you give as much info on the system you are asking about when you submit your Q.
As we well know, most people do not thoroughly read or follow instructions, so we usualy end up asking for the necessary info. We have gotten use to that here http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I agree - a good suggestion. Some users do put their specs in as a Signature. A Header for their default specs could be used similarly. Like the Signature it could be enabled/disabled by a checkbox (disabled by default maybe) and a copy of this Header could be kept viewable in the user's profile. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

The thing I like about this suggestion: When newbies first register, if there is an outline for a hardware/software profile, it makes people more aware of what details they need to provide when asking a question.
I change the hardware of my (soon to be seven) computers so often, maybe I should have a live webcam instead of a profile. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

My only comment is this. If everyone posting here knows that I am running the original 98 on a 400 Mhz AMD, a 4 GB Quantum (we think) hard drive, 128 RAM, VisionTopTech mobo (out of business) with onboard video, obsolete Award BIOS, etc...who will listen to anything I say..even with the remote possibility that I am right???? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Kay Probably not quite the right analogy, but:
Whose are the worst-shod kids in town?
PS: Have just done a "Pete" and deleted and disabled all my cookies. UserNames and Passwords all down the pan. Thank God saved the ones needed for PCGuide on good ol' trusty vellum. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/redface.gif

There are some here that have systems that make yours look like a Porsche in comparison, Kay....besides, you have made it last this long, so you must be doingsomething right http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
As far as it goes the idea of having the system specs in the sig is an ok idea, but I have seen other boards that do that and it seems to degenerate into a bragging contest....but if they where attached to the profile page and not in view all the time, but just a click away.....

Kay: Don't worry about it, most of these folks know I'm running a P-233MMX with 64MB and a 2.8 GB drive, they still listen to me...
It's not what kind of computer you're running that matters around here, it's what kind of brain is sitting in front of the keyboard...as I've said before, a computer is just a high speed idiot. It's no smarter than the person telling it what to do.
Even if you don't have a great store of knowledge, people appreciate the assistance. We have had and still do have various individuals who are struggling to learn, and don't really know a lot, but they try to help when they can and I can't think of one who hasn't learned and improved by working with us.
Those who are highly competent gladly share their knowledge and experience, whether they have screaming fast 1GHz+ computers or ancient first generation Pentiums like mine. Before long you may see me posting messages on here with a P-133 and win3.11. It's partially built, I'll be working on it more soon and if all goes well it will be ready for abuse before long...
Go for it!!
Post your specs if you wish, don't if you prefer not to. But get in there and help out when you can either way. If you peg the problem, great. If you miss, learn from it and I have little doubt you'll do better next time.

kay, you embarass me. The graphics example you sent me is even more impressive knowing the platform you worked it on. Much grit & determination - my hat's off...

Aw shucks..thanks, not_fred. Like "grit & determination" rather than "fussy old broad"...lol.
Pete: I was gonna let yours be the last word, but since it isn't, I have to say that you know, and EVERYONE else here knows, that you and I are not in the same catagory! As far as I can tell, you and Charles practically invented puters, and what you guys don't know is probably not necessary to know. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
mjc: As long as posting anyway..do want to brag just a trifle. My system is over two years old now (Sept99) and I have never had to reinstall or start over in any way, nor have I had any real problems other than with the CD writers, and one Corel office program that "ate" some system files. I baby and protect my puter and it has given me new interests, new friends, and much joy.
