I recently purchased an old Linksys Wireless Access Point model WAP11 for $10 on eBay. "Why was it only $10?" you ask. Because it didn't have the power adapter. Well, I have a shoebox full of adapters of various voltages and I figured that one of them will work. I can always buy a plug that fits into the unit at Radio Shack and splice it on to an adapter of the correct voltage.
My Linksys wireless router uses a 12V adapter and I assumed that the WAP would use the same. But on the sticker on the bottom of the unit with some other information it says Rating: 5V. I'm not sure what "rating" means or if that means the voltage of the adapter that I need. I looked at the Linksys website for some specs, but found nothing about the voltage it takes.
I don't want to fry this thing with too many volts. Any suggestions?

$21 would have got you one on Amazon.com, WITH AC adapter! ;)
You'll need to know the polarity or just take the WAP in to RS with you when you go.

You mean I saved eleven bucks? What a deal!

Taking a second look at the Linksys website, there in fact is a spec sheet for the WAP11 which says Power External, DC 12V. I didn't see it the first time.

I don't know where you found that informationn I already shouwed you what it uses. I went to Lynksys again and found another guide that states the same thing! (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1169671136819&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3681941180B01&displaypage=nodata#versiondetail)
Don't fry it to a crisp by overpowering it.
Also, how do you figure you saved money if you haven't purchased the power supply for it yet? By the time you include shipping with what you won on eBay, and spend the time plus the $15 at Radio Shack, you would have done better at Amazon. I ALWAYS look to eBay LAST! There's way to many people just so bid happy that they bid the items right over what they normally are worth. EBay is better for sellers than buyers.

I was looking at page 48 of the User Guide (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobheadername1=Content-Type&blobheadername2=Content-Disposition&blobheadervalue1=application%2Fpdf&blobheadervalue2=inline%3B+filename%3Dwap11_v28_ug .pdf&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1130821039599&ssbinary=true) under Appendix D: Specifications.

Better know your revision number, the range is from 5 to 12 volts with only the latest one being 12. ALL others are 5 volt.

I'm glad you're more observant than I am! I would have fried this thing to a crisp. The WAP I have it ver 1.1 which looks like I'll need an adapter that supplies 5V, 550mA. Thanks for the help. Yeah, maybe I should have looked at Amazon.com first. Fortunately I don't need to use it right away.
