Hi all,
What is the easiest,"simplest" way to download knoppix to cd.I must be a bit simple myself as it all seems a bit confusing.Seems like it is much easier to download and install the complete system.
THANKS,
Wombil.

The easiest way is to find one of the outfits that burn the distros to CD-ROM/DVD and mail it to you for a small handling fee.
There is a column of them on the left side here:
http://distrowatch.com/
The other way is to download the distro, burn it to CD with Nero to make an isoCD-ROM.

Post #18 HERE (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=54420&highlight=en.iso) is how I do it.

Alternately,
Download the latest .iso to wherever you choose (Desktop is fine) and then use the 'burn image' feature of your cd or dvd burner.
Worked fine for me... Problem is I lost my cd and deleted the iso download! :o :(

"Problem is I lost my cd and deleted the iso download!"
So far I'm doing all right; haven't lost the CD and the iso is stored on my USB HDD.
Wouldn't it be nice if there was an easy way to send you a copy? :)

Actually I was just saying that for a little 'effect' ;) I just looked, the iso is safe and sound.
BTW Syl,
Your version is out of date, want me to send you a copy of mine? :p Current version is 5.1.1

Well finally downloading,"Knoppix-v5-1.1cd-2007-01-04-en" to bittorrent.Bittorrent dialogue box says it will take 3:45 hrs. Does this seem right?I have an Athlon 1800 Cpu and 512/164 adsl.
Thanks guys.
By the way, if one can be sent out somehow I'd be glad of one.
Thanks again.

"want me to send you a copy of mine?"
Certainly, if it can be done reasonably simply, but how?
Otherwise I could just download the latest copy and re-burn my CD-RW disk.

Well here I am again,
I have downloaded,
KNOPPIX-V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-en [.iso I think] 696 MB ,8 files
from Bittorrent and used Nero bootable CD option to burn it to disk.
When I start up with CD as first boot I get 2 pages of setup info from CALDERA that ends with:-
CALDERA DR-DOS 7.03
Copyright [c] 1976,1998 Caldera,inc. Allrights reserved
[DR-DOS] A:\>_ [the blinking cursor].
Any idea what I'm doing wrong here.I'm running out of disks, lucky they're cheap.
Thanks,
Wombil

Well that is strange considering it should be Knoppix instead of Caldera.
Try this site for the download, it is the choice above US server, (Live CD)
http://iso.linuxquestions.org/version.php?version=412
The MD5 checksum allows you to check the burned disk for accuracy.

Used the above link, downloaded the iso file OK, erased a CD-RW holding an old copy v3.1, made the new v5.1.1 bootable CD-RW disk, Knoppix v5.1 booted just fine, and looks really good, BUT...
The mouse cursor for my Belkin wireless wouldn't work!
The little bouncy icon goes up and down, but the cursor won't move from its position centre screen.
Shut down and rebooted into Knoppix v5.0 and the mouse works just fine.
Shut down and rebooted into Knoppix v5.1 and again the mouse won't work. :(

Wombil,
You are doing exactly the same thing I did at first. Your download is fine, it's the wrong process in NERO.
You're in the second section where you can make a DOS Caldera bootdisk that you can add files and softwares to. The section you want is further over in the 5th section that says "Burn Image to Disk"
I was thrown off by the icon NERO uses. I thought that section was for copying disks but it is not.

Well, waddyaknow,GOT IT.Used the download from Linux questions and burnt it with Nero as advised by FT TED.[THE ICON IS CONFUSING] The file downloads as Knoppix-v5.1.1 but comes up as Knoppix-v5.1.0 whenstarting in the pc but who cares after all that hassle.Tried to burn it on a rewritable disk ,cause I got enough duds but the file size jumped to 736 mb but came back to 696 mb for cd-r.Everything works fine,no mouse trouble,[I use an optical mouse].There's certainly a lot of stuff on it very similar to windows too.
XP does me fine at the moment but given all the negatives and restrictions directed to MS and Vista it could be time to seek alternatives.
It's been a bit drawn out and a real lesson,
Thanks very much to all who responded.
Perhaps the first suggestion was the best.BUY ONE.

I bet the next bootable optical disk you burn using an iso file will go much more smoothly. :)
