Hi any sugestions on a replacement for a Samsung SV4002H hard drive. An exact replacement is a little pricey. I am giving this to someone and I want them to have as nice as I can do, but I'd like to keep the price down if I can. Any one have any suggestions for a less expensive alternative.

how cheap? You can buy an Western Digital 80GB hard drive for under 100 dollars US.

That's definitely an older model! :p
I agree, a nice 80GB 5400rpm 8MB cache alternative would nearly run circles around that old one. I put such a hard drive into an old P4 1.7 laptop, and it's like a new machine! It had an original 30GB hard drive in there before, and the old workhorse boots and loads programs like a champ now! The new hard drive is faster, cooler, and uses less power than the old one. I love technology! :D

How do I figure out what will actually fit in the place of the old one? You all have answered the 2 big questions 1) I can make it nicer than what I had and 2) I can probably do it with a less expensive alternative. I don't know enough to figure actually what exactly to replace it with. Thank you all so much for sharing what you have it helps me know I'm not just dreaming up something that can't be done. I am giving this to a family that lost everything they had so I don't want to give them a throw away, I want to make it as nice as I can without breaking my pocketbook because there are other things they need as well.

HDDs are made with standard dimensions.

This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149040) is the one I used, but you can pick a similar hard drive from just about any manufacturer.

Saphalline,
Your link is to a 2.5" notebook drive? The Samsung is 3.5" according to Google?

I agree, the Samsung shows as 3.5 inch drive, so it is a desktop drive. Either a 40 Gig Western Digital or Hitachi Deskstar would work nicely.

Ok, I know I'm showing I'm blonde, but 5400RPM, 9ms, UDMA/100 none of that matters? As long as I don't get one that's for a laptop, I'll be ok? I don't have to match of the specs that are listed for the hard drive I have right now?

Try this link for understanding how to buy notebook hard drives:

Most of the drives on their site exceed the specs of your old one.

Ok, I know I'm showing I'm blonde, but 5400RPM, 9ms, UDMA/100 none of that matters? Not really. I mean, you need a hard drive that uses the IDE/ATA protocol (the wide ribbon cables) but other than that, you just need a new hard drive. It doesn't matter which one.
It's sort of like buying shampoo at random. As long as you buy shampoo and not deodorant :p your hair will get clean when you take a shower.
