View Full Version : upgrade IDE Drive to SATA motherboard data cable

I'm upgrading a system.

The motherboard I've chosen has SATA data ports for the hard drive. I have IDEs that I'd just as soon use until they fail.

I've seen several low cost pieces of hardware for this purpose, but the reviews have been rather discouraging (>50% favorable).

Is there a reliable piece of hardware that will allow me to interface an IDE drive to a SATA port?

Thanks

Why bother?

You'll have at least 1 ide connector for 2 optical drives and all you need to do is use a pci ide controller card. You could get one with 2 controllers for 4 drives if you like, though mine only has one connector for 2 drives. Then you can use the RAID ports for more drives later on.

Figure a rough estimate of $25 for the controller

Since IDE/ATAPI and SATA are so different, I wouldn't recommend merging the two. I can only imagine the downsides to having an IDE hard drive converted to a SATA connector. I wholeheartedly agree with Fruss Tray Ted about an IDE controller card.

Thanks guys. A pci ide controller card it is. Your cons sure make sense.

I like the price too.

Happy Easter weekend to all.
