I was wondering, Does whoever supplies you with the BB software have an opption for Private messaging? A few of the other BB's that I use have it.

I ask because maybe when something like the KG hooopla happens, a person could just send a private message showing there disgust with the matter instead of it being in the forum.

Just a thought, I don't have them that often so I figured I would ask. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I think it is an option in the newer versions of UBB...and it may not be a bad idea....

On the one hand, the private message is a great idea. On the other hand, it leads to temptation to bypass the forum with feedback and discussion. I subscribe to several discussion lists at work where that happens all of the time; those of us not involved in the bypass are left hanging.

As for the KG thing, the basic problem was that too many people fed the fire. The only way to deal with it is to just walk away. All "we" did was give him what he wanted: we let him know that he could get in our way. I wish there was a way to communicate additional rules of nettiquette on that subject: don't ever, ever, feed the fire. Just wait until the moderator(s) ban him, then repair the damage as best we can.

I believe the ban would be better served if it were not announced (but, perhaps, quietly posted in a "banned" list elsewhere on the website). The more quietly it is done, the better.

I would agree not_fred and say that although there might be some positive aspects of private messaging the downside would outweigh the positive. Although there are sometimes gaps in the reasoning process, it's the continuity of the thought process (trial and elimination) that helps takes us to the solution.

Private conversations once a problem is posted could definitely lead to more gaps. I've encouraged those who have emailed me personally after posting a problem to please continue to pursue their answers in the thread they've begun. It's not fair to those who are contributing or following the post for the educational benefits.

The only thing I see missing is the personal conversation with the troubleshooters as a follow-up. It would be awesome to be able to glean the mental gymnastics going on before an answer is given. That could be accomplished in an email if the troubleshooter provides one.

There are many times I would like to know the "whys," the "what led you to direct the poster in that direction?"

Nah...come on folks...PM is good tool for having fun...getting to know peeps, etc....I can't see any downside to having one if it were the wishes of the big kahuna http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The down Side to PM

The disk space it would require. Storing these PM’s on the site.
The additional Software over head . Add yet another process .
The additional work it would involve to maintain .

Those who want to use e-mail or PM should setup and maintain a personal e-mail account off site
Then add it to their profile.

Yeah, Rick...you are correct in that aspect...I think that's why my sub-conscious told me to mention the Big Kahuna http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Wee kahuna 'tho I may be in this forum, the downsides are as they were stated (not by myself alone). Validity of the experience has little to do with the size of the fish, whether relative to the size of the pond or not.

personally, I find the PM's an annoyance/distraction rather than being helpfull.

unless I specifically want to be in direct contact with someone.

if people want to communicate via im's there's always icq, yahoo, aim, firetalk, msn, and several hundred other ways.

hehe

don't get me wrong, im's can be very usefull for exchanging files and ideas almost real time.

Unfortunately there is no support for PMs in this version of UBB. To add it, I would have to upgrade to a whole new version, which would mean totally changing the forums.

I understand why some people like them but I don't think it's worth the effort it would take. I also don't really see what the point is given the existence of email and messaging services like ICQ.
