What is SMC?

everytime i boot up Win ME and bring up the Program Manager (ctrl+alt+del) there is a program called SMC that isnt responding, it never responds, and everytime i boot up it says SMC(not responding) and i end the task, in the process freeing up about 20% of my system resources. So what is it?

I believe it is the Sygate firewall...

Solved here (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/t1101597435) by going back to an earlier version.

In 9x versions it shows that but if you browse the www, Sygate is obviously still working by witnessing the permissions windows that pop up when you have your settings to 'ask'. If you don't find an earlier version, I would leave the message be without disabling it.
