My windows xp media center won't start. I think that windows updates
screwed up the os because when I get to the windows loading screen
the computer just freezes and there is nothing I can do other than run
it in safe-mode and do a system restore and restore it back to the date
before I got the updates. Even though I do that, nothing works and I
really don't want to reinstall windows because then I'll lose all my stuff.
In safe-mode my DVD/CD burner doesn't work so I don't know what to
do. Please, I am very desperate for advice!!!

In safmode, the buner doesn't work, reinstalling windows is the only way to satisfy your need,

If you have a genuine WinXP disk, then you can try a non destructive total rebuild, as described here (http://www.informationweek.com/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897)
Unfortunately this will now work with a OEM restore disk.
