Would it be possible to turn off the banner ads during the search process? I check the boards more from work than home http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif and at work I don't have Opera which allows me to turn off image loading. Slows the search down considerably, and even if I wanted to click on a banner ad, I barely have time to read it before it disappears and the next page starts to load.

Tools\Internet Options\Advanced tab, scroll down to the Multimedia section and turn off pictures and animations. That should help. I still get the pictures, but no animations, it loads the first picture of the file and never goes any further.
You might also consider turning Java off, these days it's more a hazard than an asset on the Internet, too many people have figured out how to use it for things you wouldn't want them to do...and you never know about it when it happens.
Before I turned Java off Norton popped up at least a half dozen times telling me a webpage was trying to load the BadTrans virus, one tried to load SubSeven, dozens added links to Favorites or changed the start page...one dropped an Ebay icon on my mother's desktop, 20 minutes after a fresh Windows install...but best of all...I haven't seen a pop up in months.
I don't think Java has much to do with banner ads, those are mostly animations, so turning off animations in Internet Options should solve that. But it never hurts to be very cautious about using Java these days either...ActiveX too...I keep both turned off completely.

Pete,
Would you be so kind as to explain how to disable the other two? Thanks.
Another ??? for you and ixl is where is the warning about not posting in the announcements forum? I notice a lot of newbies getting put in the slammer over there. It might be better to put the rule right below the announcements hyperlink so more will see it. Maybe a big red WARNING!

To turn off Java and ActiveX go to: Tools\Internet Options\Security tab, click the Custom button. Scroll down and uncheck everything that has anything to do with either. That would include Active scripting; Disable Java (check that one); download, initialize and script ActiveX controls...and so on.
A more prominent notice concerning posting in the Announcements forum might be a good idea, we'll see how it goes once future changes are made with the forums. It's in the planning stages right now, so nothing is concrete at the moment, all I can say for sure is changes are being planned.
As it stands now, the warning is included on the page that opens when you post a new topic, those who create new topics there simply don't read it. It's there, in plain sight...
