Pete, ixl,
If and when you get to a new revision of the boards, just as a suggestion, is it possible to, in the 'hop to' window, make a chouce in there that allows us to get to the main forums page rather than into a particular forum itself? I ask this because going directly to a forum doesn't let us know if there is actually any new posts in there but to exit to the main page will let us see where new posts are. And when at the bottom of a long post it would be the ultimate time saver.
Thanks and if the answer is no, this place is still better than sliced bread. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

It's already there...look at the very top center of this page, just below the banner ad and robot warning. You'll see a link to the PC Guide Discussion Forums, one for the forum section you are in (Administrivia) followed by the forum category you are in (Suggestion Box) then the title of the current topic. Each should have a yellow folder beside it. Each goes back to the location it specifies. Those are available from any topic, except while posting or editing a message. I had to open a new window and go back to the topic to make sure I had them listed correctly.

I was mentioning to put it in the Hop To for the case of very long threads that have such a small scroll bar with the pointer to grab hold of to drag back to the top. I already knew about that one. It would be nice to have one at the bottom for when you are done reading a thread because it would be right there to use. Not important, just an idea.

OK, how's this...see the six keys on your keyboard grouped abuve the arrow keys? One is [Home] one is [End]. [Home] goes to the very top of the page, [End] goes to the very bottom, instantly. Until the proposed rearrangements are done that's the best I can do...I use both all the time, works great. [Page Up] and [Page Down] work too, one screen at a time.
If it doesn't work, click on a blank spot in the page somewhere, that brings the page to the front, and the keyboard works on whatever window is on the foreground. If you have a cursor in a form field for instance, then the keyboard will only function inside that form field. Click outside it, the keyboard once again scrolls.

My son just beat you to it. He showed me yesterday after my post. But thanks. I manage to learn something everyday, even if it's in baby steps...

surprising how you forget the things you haven't used for a while, & ignore the ones you have yet to find a use for,
I use page up/page down quite a bit, but not home/end (for quite a while) until now, use delete a lot as well, but what about insert?

Insert should switch between strike over and INSERT in the text box.....but it doesn't seem to work that way in Mozilla. It does in IE....and other apps.

I don't know what you mean by strike over but all I know for sure is it wreaks havoc in a post response box if you accidentally hit it instead of backspace.

Journey on through ages gone, to the centre of the earth.
Past rocks of quartz and granite, which gave mother nature birth.
Burial ground of ancient man, his life no more is seen.
A journey through his time unknown, I wonder where he's been.
The shore now gone behind the hills, a forest in our sight,
Rocks and distant mountains, bathed in waves of blinding light.
Forests from a far gone time, no living man has seen,
A private prehistoric world, for you and I, a dream...

Actually I meant the insert button and I just now found out it is an on then off button. I never thought to hit it a second time to shut it off.
The strike over key, well it must be my keyboard, there's no 'any key' either. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

MJC:
could you explain a little more,
OK, I'm obviously not mjc, but I'll try...
Let's say you start to type in your response to a post and you spell mtherboard wrong...as I just did (intentionally) and left out an "o". You move the I beam back to the right spot, (I beam is the proper name for the cursor used in text editing), and type in the missing "o". Usually the letter will appear.
Now press the [Insert] key once and try the same thing. The letter to the right of the one you insert will disappear. That's strike over. Insert simply places the letter in the spot you wish without removing the next character, strike over removes the character to the right.
It's useful if you want to completely remove half of a long paragraph, and change it a bit as you go. It allows you touch typists out there to read the existing text as you go and keep up, while typing away and making any changes you wish "on the fly".
It really sucks if you're like me, I type plenty fast but I have to look at the keyboard, I can't touch type. If I hit [Insert] by mistake and don't realize it, then want to add a sentence to the middle of a paragraph, it removes everything already typed along with it...and half the time I have no idea what just got deleted unless I've already re-read the thing 2 or 3 times...but I never know until I finish the extra sentence...YIKES!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

So what you say is, when the insert key is engaged or active, it 'overlays' or 'strikes over' the text that was there.
WHAT A USELESS @##$$%^^& KEY THAT IS!!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif LOL
Instead of 'insert' it should be blurbover! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif That's what I meant when I I said about 'wreaking havoc'... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
I get it, it's the 'HOKEY POKEY' key! You put the first one in, you take the second one out... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Where's my George Carlin quote when I need it?
While we're still on the subject of, if anyone hasn't forgotten a forums request, can we have a sig selection switch key too? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif OH, NEVER MIND!...
Actually FTT it is the other way around.....when it is active or engaged is allows you to insert a character instead of typing over it....some programs are nice, they use two different cursors for the different functions of the insert key, one is a block and the other is a line (either horizontal or vertical).

Thanks Pete,
that's satisfied my curiosity, I've just tried it and it seems to toggle on & off at random. but I'm not going to pursue it as it seems to be more trouble than it's worth.
Ted,
maybe you can rename it 'any' key (at least you'll have one then!) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
or maybe not http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
