I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 running Windows 98. I would like to upgrade the OS to Windows 2000 but the laptop only has a cd-rom drive. Is there another way to install the BIOS for my Toshiba without needing Drive A?

Is there a way to reconfigure the laptop to prompt me to use a USB Flash Drive or the CD-ROM rather then a floppy diskette?

Contact Toshiba to see if they have a Bios upgrade and how they suggest you install same...

You could create a boot cd with the flash on it
When booting from a cd it becomes the A: drive to the system
The only thing you will loose is the backup option for the old bios

Also
If you have it ( Boot CD ) load the cd-rom drives it can also be used for that as well.
Warning on loading to much .
Some versions of Flash don't like having anything loaded
Just a plan autoexec and or config.sys
No extra's

I think the question here is actually one of 'how to change the boot order' not about a BIOS update.

Upon booting:
Press the Escape key until option to go into Setup is shown. It will be F1 and use the arrow keys to maneuver to the Boot Priority box and use the Space Bar to change the order. End key to select and the 'Y' key to exit and save.

Be careful of your terminology, the other posts above were leading you into 'treacherous waters' where if you make 1 mistake, your laptop's ability to boot is lost.

These Tecra's boot to usb Floppy drives fine but I have never tried to boot to any other usb device in my 8200. The 8200 and 8000 are like close born siblings and are interchangeable in almost any way.

I suggest you get recovery cd's or download all the drivers and files needed from Toshiba and make one as I did, including several .pdf manuals. Also, I put the files in a partition on a new faster, larger hard drive for mine and put the original one in a drive bay that fits where the cd-rom goes for a dual-boot laptop. The other drives, a cd burner and a dvd player are swappable as well.
