where is my connection icon?

I am at a loss for this problem. My connection icon has been missing lately. I cannot disconnect without shutting down. I have checked the box that says to show icon when connected. I don't know what to do now.

There is a program called TweakUI for XP that has a "Repair" feature for rebuilding icons... I would suggest giving that a try first...
