Tubothy, it is a rating system based on how many posts you have. Although the level of "Geekdom" is representitive of your knowledge of computers, some may have a high rating because of asking a lot of questions. This is not bad because it also indicates someones desire to learn.

And yes, it is meant as a compliment http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

you sound a bit like me when I first signed up here- looking back!

only difference is that I really didn't know much when I got here but have sure learned a lot!

It is really a mere 'counter' of graduating posts not a barometer necessarily of knowlege.

However- if one can manage to stay in these forums for enough posts to get to be a Grand Master, usually this means that by that time they do know a little something and have remained well behaved enough to stay here.

that's about it I guess.

Tubothy,

It just means that you are a "neophyte geek" here at the PC Guide Forums!

In the "real world" you might be a systems administrator with 20+ years of IT experience under your belt...as some here are.

However, even the beaucoup experienced in our midst began the ardous journey to Four Star General Geekdom with the same first step! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

As mentioned earlier, it is not necessarily a measurement of one's computer knowledge...rather, one's willingness to learn, and or, share what they have learned!

What is so clever about the geek-hierachy is that geek is the buzzword and not guru or anything that suggests cleverness or insight. Here's just one dictionary definition. LOL http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

geek

Pronunciation: (gEk)—n.
Slang.
1. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.
2. any strange or eccentric person.

Paul,
Perfect description. But it is murder trying to get the feathers out from between the teeth, unless you happen to have a set of "wallies" (slang term for false teeth) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

It has come to my attention that one can attain a high ranking by doing little else ot occupy their time.

I seriously doubt we would put up with someone long enough for them to "achieve" a certain GEEK "status" if they contributed nothing.

The geek thing is just supposed to be fun, and is also some level of recognition for regular posters.

It's just a line in your UBB profile. One that can be changed if someone were to be shallow enough to post tons of junk just to increase it. It's not something that's ever had to be dealt with before here, and hopefully it will remain that way.

billyboyb...There's really no reason to be dragging up topics several months old...in most cases if it's more than about a month old, it's considered dead.

OK maybe an explanation is in order.

Check the dates of the previous posts in this topic, the last one was 4/14/2002. That's two months ago. In most cases a topic with no responses for that long is considered dead and buried.

My previous post was to let you know that it is not a great idea to resurrect topics that old, in most cases it's not necessary.

Sorry if I offended you, just doing my job...
