there is probably a simple answer to this (first time i have used Linux) how do i increase my screen resolution it will only go to 1024x768

You need to install and configure your graphics drivers. Look for instructions for Linux on the video card manufacturers website. It can be a PITA sometimes. One of those learning experiences with Linux... :p

Yes me too. I use Suse, and I can tell you it's almost worth it to get the pay version as the drivers are installed and configured during the OS installation. ;)

Maybe it's just me, but it also seems like nVidia is a little easier to get going on Linux than ATI.
