View Full Version : more problems than I can count

I have a Thinkpad T30 with XP. The power supply long ago failed and I purchased a Targus power supply.

Yesterday, that suddenly stopped working on my computer (though it seemed to charge hubbies laptop using a different tip.) So, I got his charger with the appropriate tip and things seemed to be working. (I've used this many times trouble free.)

However now my computer locks up. The mouse stops, the hard drive stops, but the LCD is still on. When I try to reboot, sometimes it will, and sometimes it won't. It stops in various places in the boot sequence--sometimes before the backlight is turned on (I can tell because I have a line out.)

If I wait a long time, it boots up great. If I wait a medium time, it will get pretty far. If I wait a short time, almost nothing. So that makes me think it is a heat issue.

My fan had been making a horrendous noise occassionally, so maybe that fan is out?

It seems to do that same with or without the battery in. Oh, and the battery light is flashing sometimes. Sometimes orange flashing, sometimes green flashing.

Other points that may have nothing to do with this problem:

I get ERROR
0189: Invalid RFID Configuration Information Area. I updated the bios last night. Seems to have taken but I still get the error. I can esc through it though. I did everything this link says to do . . .

bios update (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-42694)

Could the new Embedded Controller be the problem? Is it the fan? Or did the Targus power supply fry my computer?

Thanks for any help.
