We are looking for a laptop for our office. It's primary use would be to act as a portable powerpoint show machine. We need something fast and reliable, as well as durable - meaning that it won't break easily - that works well with projectors and can handle very large powerpoint files ( up to 500MB as least).

We have been using dells, but the laptops we have now (they are two years old) have proven to be disappointing...really slow and get held up on large files.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it!!

Hi-Welcome aboard!

The usual suspects when specifying laptops are
Toshiba
Acer
Lenovo (IBM)

Any of these should prove reliable.
I can't offer any specific advice - new laptops seem so powerful compared to ones a couple of years old that you're really spoiled for choice; and the prices are ridiculously low compared to the ones we bought a couple of years back.

Several manufacturers sell 'toughbooks' - ruggedised laptops with magnesium shells, which are a lot tougher than normal.
These do come at a premium price though, and you should weigh up the pros and cons before going that route.
