View Full Version : A problem after reinstalling Windows XP

I had been having lots of problems with my Windows XP box at home so a couple of months ago I re-installed the operating system on top of all my existing stuff because someone had told me that it would not affect my existing files and programs.

One drive was NTFS and I'd had a folder with the 'Make this folder private' box checked so that only I could access it.

After the reinstall, any attempt to click on it or access it gets an 'ACCESS IS DENIED' message even thought I am signed on as the administrator.

When I have run certain software such as virus scans or defragmentation programs I can see that they are able to access that directory.

Is there any way that I can access this folder through a back door or turn off the security on the folder. I have looked through the registry to see if I can change the security, but I haven't seen anything. I really need to access some of the files in it (old income tax and financial stuff) so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

i think you need to add the permission to your account (even admin acount) ,there are some places that let you do it.Just righ click on it ,and find what i refer

I'm not sure what you mean.

I don't see any place where this type of permission can be granted.

If I right click on the private folder, the shared box is greyed out and can not be accessed.

Also, the help info I have seen on "Administrator" states that it can "Access and read all non-private files", therefore it still won't be able to access the folder as long as it still has a status of "private". Do you know any back door way of getting in and turning it off?

you should login your pc via admin account ,and cancel " Easy folder sharing function ", how to do it ? Open your "My Computer "-->"Tools"(on top )-->"Folder Option"--->"View"-->"Advance Setting"-->cancel the " To use Easy folder sharing function " (may be on the first line ).
after canceling you will find the differences on your folder and you can make it non-private .

This happens regularly after such reinstalls and you probably just need to retake ownership of the file/folder in question.
