I know this section of the forum seems to be dedicated to A+ learning, etc. but I am really interested in teaching myself HTML at home. I was in my local bookstore and there were many books to choose from and it was all a little confusing. Of course, the one that caught my eye was "HTML4 for Dummies". It seemed like it had all the goods and it was packed with a CD with some other info and tidbits on there.
Basically, I'd like to know if anyone has read this or other HTML books and if they could recommend a good one for someone who has absolutely no computer programming experience at all. I would really like to make my own web page with links to some pics and sites that I really like. I am getting a cable connection next week and the ISP provides me with 5MB of free web space.
Since it seems like there are a lot of personal web pages out there, I would assume HTML isn't extremely hard to learn. I just don't want to spend $40 on the "for Dummies" book if it's only useful as a paperweight.
Thanks!

I would check out a few resale shops and used bookstores, you can often find good books cheaper, although most are older versions. I don't know of a good book to recommend, but plenty are out there, the best thing I know of is to browse through the book and see how it's written. If it's basically in an understandable format, it should do the trick. You can also go to your local library and find plenty books, and check them out. If you find one you really like, then you know it's worth buying.
Many people simply use a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) webpage editor like Front Page or Front Page Express, which can be installed along with win98. They work quite well.

I went ahead and bought "HTML4 for Dummies" and so far, I am pretty happy with the book. I told a friend of mine that I was learning HTML and he replied, "YOU'RE a little behind the times aren't you? There are 12 year old kids out there that have known HTML since they were in diapers."
--thanks for the confidence, buddy--
But I can say that I am pleased with what I have read so far. I don't know if we are allowed to post personal links in here (maybe in the Afterhours section?) but if, and when, I get a web page going I'll let you all know how it's going.
HTML4 for Dummies is the book i learned it with and had very good luck. the W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G. HTML editor(mentioned above) is helpful too. i used to go to webpages i liked, and save them to look at the source. then i would "customize" them to my own liking. there are too many(editors) out there to name, but i liked Aracnophob. some are free and some not, i wouldn't recommend front page or dreamweaver(or any other pay one for that matter)to a beginner unless you just want to spend the money. there are as many if not more free ones that will get the job done, and if its not doing ALL of the work for you you will have a better chance of learning something.i think wordpad is the easiest to use now as it doesn't put the wrong thing in(i still wonder how standard the html4 standard really is?*grins*) i started a little over a year ago, and now i use wordpad or IE5 or ns communicator now to do them in my sleep*grins*
and don't worry about being behind any 12 y/o's. there are so many of us who didn't grow up with a computer for a pacifier that you are definately not alone.

Kayden, great to hear you're having a good time learning html. I started off teaching myself html, using mostly online tutorials. Now I'm the webmaster of a fairly successful e-commerce website.
Once you begin to feel more comfortable in your knowledge, I would suggest taking a look at the books offered by Wrox. They publish some really good books. All their books have a red cover, so they should be easy to find.
Good luck, and have fun.
