View Full Version : Serious system crash after installation

I'm running a Windows 98e system and recently tried to install a driver for a new USB Flash card. The first part of the installation went smoothly but during the latter part, where some additional files were being installed, my system completely froze. Upon restart, I got a message telling me my registry was corrupt and was being repaired, but then, after THAT process was complete, I soon found myself looking at the blue screen telling me there was something wrong. It was only after I did a manual restore to two days prior using scanreg that I was able to get my system running properly again. I used Norton antivirus to check the install file for a virus, but it was reported as clean.

I then bought a different flash card with a different driver and the exact same thing happened when I tried to install that.

Then, to test whether this was a hardware install problem or a generic install problem, I downloaded a software program (SpyBot) and the exact same problem occurred when I tried installing THAT. So it looks like I can no longer install ANY software at this point.

The last time I checked my system (with Symantec's WindowsDoctor), the program informed me that an important Installshield file was missing: mscoree.exe. I did some research and learned that, apparently, this file isn't really needed unless one is running something called .NET something or other from Microsoft (another little "feature" we apparently need like a hole in the head, I suppose). I don't think that's in my computer (but who knows?) and if it isn't then apparently it doesn't matter whether I have mscoree or not.

Do I? And how can I get it installed if I can no longer install ANYTHING anymore?

Thanks,

Victor

The .NET thing is probably .NET Framework (http://www.megawheels.com/netframework.html) but I doubt if that is required for such installations under Win98. More likely you need to consider a clean reinstall when scanreg restore hasn't done the trick.

Since everything else on my system is running smoothly, I'm reluctant to take so drastic an action as a re-install. I've got tons of software installed on my C drive and am not looking forward to having it all wiped. So if anyone here has ANY ideas as to why a Win98se system would nosedive during the very last phase of a software (or hardware) installation, PLEASE speak up.

Thanks.
