I have Vista Ultimate on one of my machines. This evening I was playing Solitaire when all of a sudden it shut down and restarted. As it was shutting down there was a message on the screen that said, "Windows is configuring updates." After it shutdown, it started up again with a message down by the System Tray that read something like, "Windows has restarted to configure your updates." My solitaire game was still open, but it did not save my game.
Now I'm not saying that it was a big deal that my game wasn't saved. It just ticked me off that it restarted on it's own. I could have been working on something important. Normally when I download an update in XP, it asks me if I want to restart. It didn't ask me with Vista. So, I changed it by going to Control Panel and finding the place where you can change your settings for updates. There were three options there:
1) Install automatically. (That's the one that was checked by default)
2) Download updates but let me choose when to install them.
3) Check for updates but let me choose when to download and install.( That's the one that I checked.)
4) Never check for updates. (That, of course is not a good choice)
I'm wondering if anyone else has run into that. I think it's a rally poor idea to have it restart while you're in the middle of something with out asking. Does anyone agree with that? Or am I just too hard to please:) But mainly the reason I'm posting this is to see if it's happened to anyone else. Thanks.

As I recall there is another area you can have the system do auto updates.
In the scheduler area .
3am as default comes to mind as the default ..

Even then it should have given you a warning
But knowing windows it may have only appeared as a button on the taskbar.
I don't have it running at the moment to check

You could be right on that. It seems that if you're using Vista, you need to keep one eye on the task bar. I remember sometime ago, I was ready to hit my printer with a hammer because it wouldn't print. I finally noticed a little glowing button down on the task bar that I had to click on which brought up a message that I needed to complete the printing task. It is part of Vista's security whereby when you want to do something a little window will pop up telling you to click OK if you really want to do it. I think that Vista's User Account Control is a little bit "over-kill."

Did you loose anything when it happened to you?
