How to hook up console/rollover cable to laptop?

I'm connecting two Cisco 2600 series routers to my desktop and laptop. However, the console/rollever cable I need to connect to my serial connection on my laptop is a female end, and the laptop serial port is also female. Am I missing something? The serial connector on my desktop is male, so there's no problem. Why would it be male on one computer and female on another? All the console/rollover cables I see that use a serial plug all have female ends.

You sure it is a serial port on the laptop, and not a VGA? I see many many laptops (especially newer ones) that have no serial port. In which case what you need is a USB to Serial converter.

Never seen a female serial port on any PC or laptop myself.
