I have XP SP2 and have in the past occasionally downloaded a program install file and saved it to Desktop to install later.

Now I see that that is not a good practise, for some reason? For example, with AVG Free the instructions say: "Download & Save (never to Desktop or My Documents) to a folder on C drive----".

Can someone advise me why the Desktop wouldn't be a good place for the Install file?

Thanks.

I think that sometimes virus removal programs are extra picky about where they are placed, and especially the conditions you install them under. Otherwise I don't know of any particular reasons you shouldn't be able to put install files on the desktop- it's really just a folder in Documents and Settings.

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't put install files on the desktop. I do it all the time.

It used to be recommended not to put HJT on the desktop because of backup files. That's not even a problem anymore though.

One main difference between putting the downloads in another folder on the C drive is that it is outside the user accounts and settings area and thus accessible by all users and more easily shared down a network. If you have admin rights then the destop or anywhere of your choosing should be perfectly fine.
