For the past week I have not been able to restore to any of the restore points. I go thru the motions and when the machine reboots I get a msg that it could not restore.
A couple of days ago I booted into safe mode turned off system restore and rebooted normally. The restore points were now gone. I then turned system restore back on and began accumulating restore points. Tried to restore again tonight and it did not work.
Any ideas?

Have look here (http://bertk.mvps.org/html/error.html) and see if any of these are the error you are getting.
Hope that helps.

Wouldn't you be MUCH better off using image backups than System Restore?
If Windows isn't functioning, an image [restored from an internal or external drive/partition using a prog loaded from a bootable disk] can get Windows working again, whereas System Restore would be of no help at all.
i.e. Restoring an image can do all that System Restore can do and more. :)

I do make images on an external HDD in case the C; drives goes kaput or it gets so clogged that is the best way to go.
However, System Restore I can back away from and generally it has corrected minor problems.
Reading some of the literature I see tells me to reinstall the System Restore. How do I do that? Do I need to uninstall it first? How?

Here are the instructions (http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#ReinstallSR) from the website. You will most likely need an XP CD handy.
