I have a ibm thinkpad which gets very hot under the information plate on the base, especially when running on mains power, I have fitted a new battery and it only lasts for about 20 minutes. Any suggestions for a newbie??

Sounds like two different issues.

The older laptops do tend to get hot, not that big of a deal. You could try taking it apart and cleaning out the insides if you like. But basically that part acts as a big heatsink for the laptop, so it will get hot.

As for the battery, what do you mean by new? These batteries do have a limited shelf life, so if it is a new (as in original) battery it is probably bad. If it is new as in a moder replacement part then it should last a few hours. Have you tried letting it charge fully, then drain fully a few times?

Yes Erik, I have tried all that. It must be a bad battery.
