Working with an e-Machine which had a power supply go bad. Went on the internet, found the part number and ordered a new PS. Installed same. However, when the PC is turned off, the HD light stays on and the power on button no longer will bring the PC up. If I disconnect the power cord and reconnect it, I'm able to boot the machine OK and all works, with HD light coming on only when I'm accessing it. Again, when I turn off the PC, the HD light stays on.

I know that the PS supplies 5 VDC (standby power) to the motherboard all the time, so that electronics can turn it on and off, but this is puzzling. I'm wondering if some damage was done to the electronics on the motherboard when the 1st PS went down.

Any ideas or suggestions? The PC can still be used, but that HD light bothers me and points to some kind of problem which will bite me down the road.

If I disconnect the power cord and reconnect itThe mains supply and not the molex connector to the HDD itself??

Regardless - I would strip back to a barebones boot. Reset the CMOS/BIOS to failsafe defaults and add back the hardware piece by piece.

Did you disconnect any cables from the front panel headers on your motherboard when changing out the PSU?

Did not disconnect any front panel cables from the mobo -- just re-plugged all the power cables to the various drives -- floppy, hd, cd-rom, mobo fan sockets, etc.

Will go back to BIOS and do the fail-safe routine. Thanks, both, for the advice.

Only other thing I can think of off the top of my head would be the ATX12V1 connector. A power connector that is much smaller than the main AXTPWR1 connector 10X2 (?), which I believe is a 2X2 (4-pin) connector. When I replaced a power supply a while back on a PC, the new PSU came with the auxiliary connector and another connector snapped on to the main power connector. Confusing part was, both the connector snapped onto the main ATX power connector and the auxiliary connector looked about the same. You might start checking for an extra cable dangling from the PSU and make sure (if your motherboard requires one) that the 4-pin auxiliary power cable is plugged in.
