I am about to build a new PC, but first want to know what caused the failure the last one. Having swapped components with other PCs and tested devices I know that the CPU, PSU, sound card and both disks (which were in a RAID set) failed at the same time. The floppy drive still works fine though.
This PC was connected via a UPS that appears to work fine (but how can I be certain?). The only weak spot I can think of was the phone line going to the dialup modem - but surely a power spike with such wide consequences could not travel that way.
What could have caused this calamity please ?
