I bought a Athlon 64 4000+ to replace my 3400+. I swapped it out, the cpu was reconized and everything booted up alright. I didn't notice anything was wrong until I tried playing Company of heroes. It took forever to load and even when it did load, the PC would freeze. I tried other apps and the loading times were extremely long. What's worse is the system fails to detect my RAM that's not in the first slot. I tested the slots one at a time and found that only the 1st and 3rd slots work, but when if i put ram into 1 and 3, the PC gets past the POST screen and hangs. I threw the 3400+ back in and everything now works fine again. Did I get a bad CPU? Was I suppose to do something in BIOS after I installed the chip? motherboard?

Update your BIOS if you haven't already.

I updated the bios. Gonna wait 'till morning to see if it did anything. I ran out of thermal paste.

Your power supply may be running out of juice. The new CPU needs approx. 25 watts more power than the old one.

Glad to hear that you fixed the problem.

If you're saying that you also installed a new MB, then reinstalling Windows is normally recommended whenever this is done.
