A neighbor has a system with XP Pro SP1 He is using a dial up connection. To update this to SP2, can the updates be downloaded to a cd at the library and then installed?

Yes, you can download SP2 from the Microsoft developer site. I also have a free CD-ROM from Microsoft to install SP2 on any version of XP.

Here is the link to order the disk from MS. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/sp2cdorder.mspx

I think I got mine in about a week.

I think they only ship to the US and Canada though. If you are across the pond you are out of luck.

Oh yeah, a couple of cautions: the PC with SP1 MUST BE CLEAN OF MALWARE before attempting to load SP2.
Also update any drivers before the attempt as well.

Well, they may be out of luck ordering a disk, but as long as they or someone nearby has a fast connection, they can make their own (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=22&p=8&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId=&u=%2fdownloads%2fdetails.aspx%3fFamilyID%3d049c9db e-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a%26DisplayLang%3den).

Hehehe, I just used Firefox to D/L it for giggles [I already have it] and their site said it would take at least 48 minutes on DSL, or 25 minutes with a T1 connection. I have the [mid] bargain version of my isp's phone line broadband. I set my 'egg' timer... It took 13 minutes!!!

My 'eggs' may be rather well 'fried' at that length of time but I'll raise a 'toast' to my isp. They brag about being fast, but this is WAY t-o-o cool! :D

Edit:
Free of malware, yes. This is Imperative. But I never pay much attention to driver, nor BIOS updates. Haven't had any problems thus far and if I ever do, I will retract my words openly.
