ram capacity

i have a ram which is not showing full capacity specified,actual capacity is 64 MB,(8*8 mB chips)but it is showing only 48 MB capacity,8 MB is allocated for video purposes.hence it has to show 56 MB.is there any chances of a 8 MB chip failure

You might try reseating the memory chips. You could have a bad chip as you suggested. Since it sounds like an old system, you must just check your BIOS settings and see if there is any kind of setting related to memory that might need to be tweaked.

Make sure that the ram sticks or the same FPM or EDO
And see if the ram has to be installed in pairs
Check owner's manual for this info.
