Hi. Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

The cd-rom is not needed because the dvd-rom will read cd's fine. This will open a place for you to put the extra drive.

You should be fine adding a hard drive but if you get a performance boost depends on the drive you upgrade to compared to the one you have.

Partitioning also helps performance at times and should be considered if you plan on putting your operating system (XP?) on the 160gig drive. 20 gigs is a nice number normally for XP, give or take, depending on your particular interests and intended uses.

What is that 40 gig drive and which 160 do you plan on getting?

That is an old motherboard and may hit the 128GiB (137.4GB) HDD limit so I suggest you stay at or below 120GB single drive size.

There are many ways to work around size limits. And smaller drives are becoming rare, also the best deals are much larger than 120 or so gigs.
